Last Chance Ranch Feel Like a Kid Again
Second Chance Ranch is a community of homes for children and teens needing a safe and stable home. Each child is welcomed into the home of a loving set of parents. The children receive therapeutic services to help them heal from past traumas according to what they have been subjected to. The primary focus of these homes is to welcome sibling groups and keep them together. It is often difficult within the foster care system to find homes that are large enough, have adequate resources, and are willing to accept a group of 3, 4, 5, or even more siblings.
Second Chance Ranch are a group of licensed family-style residential child care homes through the Arkansas Department of Human Services. Current capacity is 36 youth in campus homes; all ages are welcome. We will always group children together by developmental appropriateness, with a focus on keeping siblings together in the same home.
Blending traditional values with modern therapeutic techniques, Second Chance Ranch Homes provide a caring home for youth facing difficult situations and choices.
Working On Reunifications
We place top priority on restoring families; working with the family is the most important aspect of working with abused, neglected, and at-risk youth. The goal is to help children and families to heal and reunify. Our team works closely with family members to turn this goal into a reality. Services for the family include parent support groups, intensive family therapy weekly, limited case management for parents/guardians, referral services, experiential/adventure therapies, family weekends, and structured home visits with clinical support. Most youths want to return to their families and their families want them home. However, many children cycle in and out of programs/facilities with few resources dedicated to solving crisis in the family. Identifying, engaging and working with the family system is the cornerstone of our clinical program and critical in reducing recidivism.
Working On Adoption
If the state has determined that reunification is not a safe possibility, then we will help to connect children with potential adoptive families. Every child is wanted and cherished, and every child deserves a family. We are proud to partner with local ministries that recruit and train potential adoptive parents. We regularly take our children to adoption events and help to connect them with families.
Home Life
Inside the doors you will find regular homes. Days are filled with dinner around the table, bike riding, board games, pitching in to clean up, prayers, laughter, and just a touch of big family style craziness. To create consistency, trust and relationship, each home provides space for up to 6 children and a set of parents—creating the most stable home-like environment possible. Frequently for the children, we serve "home" has been a chaotic, uncertain place. We work hard to make sure that our children begin to understand what a healthy family
should look like. The parents certainly make the most direct impact on our kiddos, but we have an entire team to surround the children and help them to heal. The team includes therapists, behavior specialists, case managers, volunteer mentors, and church pastors.
Just as all families are unique, each of our homes has its own identity. Some of our homes keep busy schedules and are involved in lots of activities, and some prefer to stay at home more. Some of our families love to travel and adventure, and some love card games and crafts. On any given Saturday, you might pull up at one of our campuses and find one family sleeping in and then gathering around a late brunch, another family up early and challenging each other at the basketball court, and another family has gone on a road trip to the Memphis Zoo.
As different as each of our families is, there are some things that aren't unique, that you will find in every single one of our homes.
Prayer- Our parents and support staff pray over our kids every day. When challenges arise or our kids face battles, we fight for them in the very most effective way possible. And we teach them that prayer is their best weapon.
Cheerleading- We celebrate our kids in a big big way! Every accomplishment is a huge deal, from making an A on a test to keeping your temper under control during a hard moment. These kids know exactly who their biggest fans are!
Life Skills- Part of growing up is learning all the grown-up things. For our younger group, we start out with learning to share and play nicely, using manners, helping around the house and taking care of hygiene. For our older crew, they begin to learn cooking, cleaning, social skills, work ethic, study habits, finance management, driving, and holding a job.
Love- The most common phrase spoken around here is definitely "I love you". We are constantly hugging, high fiving, and just reminding our kids how loved they are.
Values- Learning right from wrong and understanding the importance of following positive role models is key to any child's development. In our homes, every rule has a reason and asking "why" is absolutely okay.
Safety- These homes are a safe haven. They are a place where you can talk about your feelings and what you have been through, and you will know that you will be kept safe. The abuse that may have occurred before will not happen here, no matter what. No progress can ever happen until a child really understands that they are safe and provided for.
Our philosophy is that the past doesn't have to define our kids. We serve a God who restores and redeems. Jesus can provide hope in what may have felt like a completely hopeless situation. They can begin to see their own value and get excited about the good things that God has planned for them.
Long Term Connections
Although our focus is to help restore families, we recognize that some children will never be able to return home. Those children for whom parental rights have been terminated and adoption is not a viable option, we hope to provide a permanent home. We want to be that place that our grown-up kids bring their kids for Thanksgiving dinner. We hope to stand in the gap as the family for as long as our kids need it, or maybe even forever. In addition to being a loving home, we have many support services in place to help our kids succeed. Available services include: individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, parent education/support groups, behavior management, case management, adventure programs, residential activities, educational/tutoring labs, social skills training, spiritual counsel, and medication management.
Community Involvement
We are actively seeking to partner with a variety of agencies and community services organizations to better connect the youth we serve with their families and their families with the communities in which they live. Developing community-based coalitions improves our ability to address systemic issues affecting the family.
Second Chance Ranch has access to Bryant public schools and Arkansas Christian Academy. Each youth is assessed for the most appropriate academic environment to best meet the unique educational needs of each student. Bryant school district boasts student achievement scores surpassing state averages and offers many extracurricular activities/opportunities. Arkansas Christian Academy is the premier private Christian school in our area, combining high standards of academic excellence and solid Biblical values.
Bryant Campus Homes
Our Bryant campus is located right in the heart of Bryant, Arkansas. It is close to limitless community resources. This beautiful 25-acre campus consists of huge grassy yards, two roomy residential homes, playground equipment, basketball goals, and a large fishing pond. Typically, our older children prefer this campus due to its proximity to jobs, extracurricular activities, and friends. We offer a full range of independent living services to young adults ages 16 and older on this campus.
Second Chance Youth Ranch
Our ranch campus is located near Paron, Arkansas. It is a retreat like none other. Situated on 300 acres in the middle of rolling hills and forest land, it serves as an oasis of peace and tranquillity. Deer, turkeys, rabbits, and the occasional timid black bear can often be spotted as one drives up the five-mile dirt road. Once arriving at the end of the driveway, we are transported back in time to the days of the old west. The sheriff's office, saloon, bed n breakfast, and bank are just some of the fascinating buildings that serve as home. Although this campus may look like an old western town on the outside, the houses are modern and homey on the inside. Our ranch campus consists of tree swings, picnic tables, playground equipment, a full basketball court, library, general store, computer/tutoring lab, tree house, walking/biking trails, chicken coup, chapel, guest home, and fishing/canoeing/wading access to the Saline River.
